If Beale Street Could Talk Premieres in New York, A Strong Oscar Heading into November

If Beale Street Could Talk is another movie that is picking up momentum as the season chugs along. When it didn’t hit Telluride there was some discussion that it wasn’t good enough. But that turns out not to be true. It, like A Star is Born, is a love story, though clearly more political and one of the wave of black filmmakers this season miraculously has on offer. With a 92 on Rotten Tomatoes, passionate love for the film is exactly what will push it to the top of ballots. With the preferential ballot you need passionate love when it comes to nominations, though not necessarily how it wins.

Beale Street had its premiere at the Apollo Theater in New York and was met with a standing ovation. The buzz around the performances are promising, with Regina King a potential frontrunner in Supporting, and Stephan James has just been announced to campaign for lead. There is also some chatter about Brian Tyree Henry, also in supporting.

Beale Street is being talked about as a film that depicts black culture in America the way few films have. It’s interesting to see that two films in the race are love stories. A rarity in the Best Picture race.
