The TCA Awards always seem like an Emmy Awards pipe dream. What nominee are you hoping translates this season?
The TCA Award nominations always feel like the polar opposite of the Emmy Awards. The Television Academy is often criticized for lazy voting practices, resulting in the same nominees for stretches of time (looking at you Jon Voight in Ray Donovan!), but honorees at TCA vary drastically from year to year. This year, I’d have to say that the nominees are pretty darn great!
HBO led the overall nominations with 15 bids, thanks to broad recognition across the drama, comedy and limited series categories. Despite a controversial final season, Game of Thrones received a Program of the Year nomination. It last won the category in 2012. Also adding to HBO’s pack-leading haul were Succession, Barry, and Sharp Objects – each receiving two nominations.
Netflix’s Russian Doll and FX’s Pose were the most nominated series with 4 nominations each. Fleabag earned 2 nominations for its first season 2 years ago, but the Phoebe Waller-Bridge comedy grabbed 3 nominations this morning. Last year’s comedy winner, The Good Place, is nominated again for Outstanding Achievement in Comedy, but the most thrilling news of this year’s batch is two nominations for PopTV’s Schitt’s Creek! It is nominated in both Outstanding Achievement in Comedy, and Catherine O’Hara was nominated for Individual Achievement in Comedy alongside Waller-Bridge, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and (the lone male in the category) Bill Hader.
What do you think of the nominations? Is there anything you’d want to see translate to the Emmy Awards this year? Sound off in the comments!
