I mean, we’ve never had a BD winner with no SAG or ACE nominations… But I get your point. Maybe it’s not THAT far from a valid trajectory. (Still, often not that far is still too far…)
I can’t see Sam Mendes losing directing. I don’t think Once Upon a Time is loved enough to pull the double. Birdman was loved and competition was only Boyhood, which is not an industry movie and is not cathartic as Parasite.
I will disconsider the editing snub in his case as I did for Birdman. Winners without an acting nom we had a couple.
That was for picture, not Pitt’s win.
Last one to do so was in 1950. So, for the last 70 years, the answer would be “none”. 🙂
🙂
Makes sense. I still expected (and predicted) it to get in, after the WGA nod, and it did. 🙂 Which helps it a little, probably…
Yeah, maybe…
I don’t think there IS a front runner, but I also absolutely don’t think Bong is less likely than anybody else to win it!…
If it wins the “count” by winning those three (although it’s still not at all guaranteed to not be outscored even then), I might need to reconsider my system’s reading of such situations. (Which would be basically unprecedented.) But, yeah, I don’t think it’s winning the PGA either, especially after losing Picture tonight and only tying for director. To me this result says the “real” GG winner was Once and 1917 only won because it was in the other category, they didn’t love The Irishman and didn’t want to go so much against the critics again (and face the backlash) by awarding Joker – and 1917 will come out of all of this being considered a directing-only winner, at best. But you just never know…
That’s just it. It’s disrespectful to the director. If Sam Mendes wins BD (Which he should), then 1917 should also win BP. Obviously, last year is different since Green Book wasn’t nominated at BD (and shouldn’t have won BP).
I’m glad Bates got in for Jewell because I really liked her. I’m not sure who I would have personally voted for between her and Lopez. (My #1 is obviously Robbie.)
Insanely happy for Quentin’s instant classic and Bong’s win. Really sad though for the incredible The Irishman – 14 nominations, one win for acting ensemble, wtf? I’d really love to see these awards shake up the acting categories but alas. Finally, hell yeah for Wild Rose’s Glasgow.
1917 is much weaker than it appears ; It will do well at Bafta in BD , but I’m not even sure it will win BP … it will never win BP at Oscar ;one of the reasons being that few Americans are informed or even care about WW1; it doesn’t loom large in the historical landscape like it does with Brits … but it still couldn’t get an actor or writing nom even at Bafta … it’s weak
Agree completely about Phantom Thread. One of the best films of the decade . The Academy did itself proud with those nominations.
I guess if you consider a movie as bloated boring and pretentious as The Irishman a technical achievement because of it’s cheesy de-aging and all the money they spent on Scorsese’s folly of hubris that gave us this abomination of a movie , I guess it’s an achievement of some kind . The only worthwhile thing in the whole 3 and a half hours was Joe Pesci.
The VFX are pretty damned impressive when you get into it… Even though some of them looked a bit wonky. But otherwise there’s nothing technically AMAZING about it.
I’d be surprised if it did, but I could definitely see MS only getting the 3 actors and OSP and it’d be totally reasonable… But with the expanded BP field it’d be tough to get those 4 categories and NOT BP.
And I liked FvF so I’d be cool with it getting in everywhere it’s a reasonable choice like BP, Actor and 4-5 crafts.
Of course, how could I forget?
Anti Tarantino vote will be split between Parasite and 1917 , that’s why I’m predicting Hollywood for both BP and BD
Expert analysis
The last seven years or so Best Director has felt like a “technical achievement” award. Life of Pi, Gravity, Birdman, Revenant, La La Land, Shape of Water, Roma. Will it be that way again this year with 1917? (Though I would argue that Parasite is also an impressive technical achievement in directing as well.)
go watch the pretentious one-take video game again.
I had it with Phantom Thread last year. But too often it’s a sinking feeling rather than a YHASSSS
That would be like my nightmare scenario 🙁
Haha probably because for that brief moment between the AMPAS president announcing the presenters and the presenters starting to announce the nominees, it is all still so very exciting and hopeful and if lucky, we may even get a few “YHASSSS” moments during the announcement, as well … then it all sinks in, we realise deserving faves we stanned hard, were not on the lineup and it all goes to shit. But at the end of the day I think we all live for those brief moments of excitement and joy when we see someone whose work we admired in the previous year, recognised. The rest is just background noise. Or at least it should be 🙂
If it is any consolation, I have a damn event at that time (1:18PM in the UK) so I already have the live stream and AD up on my phone and the discreet earbuds ready just so I can listen to the whole thing and read your initial reactions while low-key covering my ear and pretending to pay attention to the stage in front of me 🙂
“Well, I mean, my point is that ACE and BAFTA probably realized it was useless to nominate a one shot gimmick at the past (Birdman), and now they decided to not do it again.”
Ah, got it. I don’t figure they think that way, especially when nobody gives them any stick for making a pick (which of course they didn’t, for nominating Birdman in editing), but who knows?!
“But I agree 1917 is definitely not getting acting and its chances in writing are low. I just wanna say that a Editing snub is gonna be a minor problem.”
Other recent serious BP contenders that “only” had an editing snub and lost:
– Roma (also had SAG snub, but so did Green Book; it DID also have a SAG acting snub – but so does 1917, in fact, on both counts);
– Get Out (WGA winner; also Lady Bird, the same year);
– Manchester by the Sea (not really a strong contender, in the end, although it seemed like it could be, early on, and if Moonlight could win maybe so could this one… anyway, I’d like to point out that editing was its only major industry snub);
– Midnight in Paris (WGA winner; SAG acting snub too, again, just like 1917 – but had the ensemble nomination);
– Up in the Air (WGA winner; also SAG ensemble snub, like 1917);
– Brokeback Mountain (enough said);
– Sideways (SAG+WGA winner – also won the Globe and Critics Choice BP, by the way, no other major industry snubs).
A minimum of three of these were HUGE contenders for the BP win (Roma, Brokeback Mountain and Sideways) and the only discernible stats-based reason they lost to the movies they lost to was a Best Editing snub. 1917 isn’t even that strong, since it was also snubbed by SAG altogether. It’s almost as strong as Roma (but no Critics Choice BP win, only tied for director), but its competition is much, much stronger than Roma’s was…
Birdman, the only movie that’s won without the editing nomination in the last 40 years or so, had ZERO other major industry snubs, dominated screenplay that year and won PGA+DGA+SAG. (Ineligible for WGA.) 1917 is nowhere near that level of strength, even if it wins PGA+DGA. Maaaybe if it wins WGA it almost comes close, but with no SAG love whatsoever it’s in Braveheart territory – one exception in 24 years, and none in the last 23 years. But I guess you could say AFTRA might have changed things a bit – although, since 1917 isn’t getting any acting or ensemble love whatsoever anywhere else, either, I don’t think that’s a real argument in this case.
That’s fair enough – I mean I think there are plenty of reasons to rule out 1917 anyway – lack of acting or (maybe, we shall see) writing nominations being the big ones and lack of SAG ensemble (though that may be dead after the last couple of years and the argument people have that AFTRA killed it, I dunno) among others. Even though I don’t think I’ve completely ruled it out yet I probably should have.
See what I replied to Alex on the same topic, two messages below!
Well, I mean, my point is that ACE and BAFTA probably realized it was useless to nominate a one shot gimmick at the past (Birdman), and now they decided to not do it again. But I agree 1917 is definitely not getting acting and its chances in writing are low. I just wanna say that a Editing snub is gonna be a minor problem.
And I’m not so confident about Parasite getting no acting noms. There’s a out of nowhere nominee in acting almost every year.
Also didn’t miss at BAFTA… (Which, again, 1917 did.)
Yeah, but if ACE AND BAFTA realized that (which, again, wasn’t even the case with Birdman), I think it’s pretty likely the Academy’s editing branch will reach the same conclusion. 🙂
And it’s not getting in for acting. Not even Parasite is, and that one’s much more of an acting showcase, from what I understand. 1917’s best shot at an acting nod is in lead, and that category is far too stacked.
I think ACE and BAFTA just realized it’s not worthy to recognize one shot gimmicks. I still think with acting and specially writing, Editing snub would be no problem to this film.
I really don’t think so. Birdman won BP despite losing the Editing nomination and it was also a one shot gimmick. Acting and specially Screenplay are way more important to 1917.
I’m interested who you think if he misses (or even if Hanks misses which I’m not ruling out despite him hitting everywhere) the alternative will be? I really doubt Foxx because there may be a lot of people who just don’t watch it and generally “surprise” nominees tend to be from films they watched and ticked boxes, hence I do wonder whether it would even be possible if Alan Alda or Taika Waititi took that slot? I don’t think either are likely – I’m just brainstorming but if it is going to be that kind of nomination I guess Song Kang-Ho is the most obvious. I don’t really see enough of the academy watching or liking the Lighthouse (though I could be wrong there) but you (or anyone else) may have ideas? Or maybe I should just predict the obvious 5. Currently I have Song Kang-Ho as a kinda NGNG pick (even though increasingly more people are picking him out still feels risky) but I’m not confident and may change back to Hopkins.
Indeed. 🙂
Pretty much for the same reason you prefer 1917 – it feels like it compliments the movie just a touch better than in 1917’s case. But I loved both of them in any case. It’s shaping up in such a way that I don’t think I’ll be disappointed with any of the wins, but I am actively rooting for Mendes, Deakins, Phoenix, OUATIH, Phoenix and Guðnadóttir.
Think 1917 and Joker excelled in a lot of the same ways technically, though 1917 is clearly the better overall movie. I’m happy for them to split the sound and image categories if it comes to it.
I sincerely hope so and not just because he is criminally overdue but also because I genuinely thought his score was the best in 2019 but so far it’s not looking good. Hopefully the Academy will give him his first Oscar at last.
I noticed that too
yep though at least they didn’t try to pander to outrage mob with Gerwig/Whichever tie.
Joker score is good but a lot more limited than the 1917 one in terms of breadth. It’s Newman’s time, surely,
I really wish Once wouldn’t win BP but it’s the clear favourite. I hated it so much.
I want 1917 to win but stats are against it. I wish Parasite would win instead of Once, even Irishman I could handle.
Disagree about the Deakins/Newman comment.
I do think Deakins should win, he definitely deserves it. But the Joker score is better than 1917, is better used through the movie and was a catalyst for the main performance.
I definitely think it’s a split year as well, with Mendes for Director and OUATIH for Film. And I would be quite pleased with that.
Give 1917 4-5 awards, OUATIH 3-4, a couple for Joker and Little Women, and a host of other movies with one award.
Which adds to their pointlessness.
Yup…
Agreed. The score is phenomenal, I can’t stop listening to it. It will be his 15th nomination! He has to win
That doesn’t really follow.
means they can’t decide which one to predict. they are predict awards after all and likely feel that industry could go either way.
And Parasite isn’t winning BP without Screenplay or Director. Boy, I hope I was wrong. It’s the best movie of 2019.
Not gonna lie, I slept through this one, but now seeing the list of winners, I have a few observations :
1. Scorsese and Tarantino not only lost to Mendes again but this time it was also confirmed they weren’t even top2. I think Mendes will win Bafta so unless there is a big surprise at DGA, I think he will get the Oscar and he would deserve it, too. Not sure if 1917 can also go all the way in BP (would need at least one nod in writing and / or acting). I think we are heading toward another BP (OUATIH) / BD (1917) split … unless 1917 does deliver writing and / or acting nods today, then I could see it peak at just the right time and go all the way.
2. Acting categories continue to cement the frontrunner status of the Zellweger – Phoenix – Dern – Pitt quartet however it can’t be emphasised enough that this perception is based on them winning both the Golden Globe and the Critics Choice award and while that’s a good start, neither is a proper industry award with overlap with Oscar voters so they will also need at least one from the SAG-Bafta duo. I’m not sure all four will win both SAG and Bafta (a Brit or two could surprise at latter), but I think they will all win at least one of the two and eventually the Oscar.
3. As much as I am rooting for Roger Deakins in Cinematography, his inevitable and incredibly deserved second Oscar should come hand in hand with Thomas Newman‘s first. By far the best marriage between cinematography and score in 2019 and both would be my picks for the win in their respective categories if I had a vote. I do give a lot of crap to Joker because I firmly believe it doesn’t deserve nominations in picture, director, writing BUT I’ve always said I consider it worthy of nods in lead actor, cinematography and score, however I would be only OK with it winning in Lead Actor. Its cinematography and score were both good and at times even very good so worthy of nominations but ffs 1917 was on another level in both those departments and would deserve to win the Oscars with ease.
4. The Irishman underperformed big time once again. Can’t be emphasised enough that while good to build perception, HFPA and the BFCA aren’t nearly as influential as the guilds and Bafta (lots of Oscar voters in both) so the film could still have a big comeback but for now I’m getting more of a Gangs of New York vibe (nominations ? yes. wins ? nope) than anything else.
5. I think Greta Gerwig is winning Adapted. Its only real competition is The Irishman but it has been fading while Little Women seems to be emerging, not enough for serious consideration in BP / BD, but probably enough for a win in Adapted. I think it will happen regardless of what happens to the film in the other above the line categories : if it does well (picture, actress, supporting actress) or even REALLY well (director, editing), it will be deemed strong enough to warrant at least one above the line win (adapted); and if it gets snubbed in most or even all those above the line categories except Adapted (stats-wise could totally happen), then Gerwig in adapted could get that “poorben” kind of unbeatable narrative. My two cents.
Certainly by critics…
It is the second game, I think. There are two minutes left—team we like up by 5. My iPod is almost dead.
So the game’s still on – wow! (You mentioned one a lot earlier.) Or is it another game?
My partner accepts it far too easily and even pretends it’s super normal… I sometimes wonder whether he’s secretly a psychopath…
Good luck!
I’d argue it’s the opposite: if the same movie should win best picture and director, the directing win should be automatic and it should be best film->best director rather than best director->best picture
Split director and Picture have happened in
1998
2000
2002
2005
2013
2015
2016
2018
‘nowhere near as’ is a bit much. Lincoln has a MC value of 86, after all.
It was the favourite to win with the bookies until late in the race and had the obvious BA winner ..Argo was not even nominated for BD
I personally disagree simply because there are years in which I’d split the awards (Burning winning picture, Jenkins winning director, The Wind Rises winning picture but Miyazaki not necessarily winning director over Wong, Eternal Sunshine winning picture, probably Scorsese or Mann winning director) but the way the Academy splits picture and director these days is ridiculous and in my opinion disrespectful to what a director does.
Hey folks, the announcements of the nominations starts in 30 minutes.
I’ve predicted Alan Alda!
The only real eye-raiser here was 1917 winning Best Film Editing, which I thought would go to something like Ford v Ferrari. I do have to admit that I expected Parasite to win Best Picture here, considering how over the moon critics are for that movie. Aside from those, none of the wins surprised me.
The problem with the Irishman is similar to Lincoln ; it was a great historical movie that captured the past well and had gravitas ; but it killed off its chances by being too long , too dry and wordy .. it lost the audience cos it didn’t have the entertainment factor essential for a BP winner
BAFTA lovvvved Joker. I’ll be surprised, at this point, if it misses there, too. But AMPAS might do something different.
I dunno, the last time a film won without it was birdman and there is a very obvious parallel between them so I feel like that point is valid.
For me it’s a dog to get that, mainly because of the BAFTA snub, as a British film…
It’s not won for screenplay anywhere, right?
But without the director (and screenplay to an extent) you don’t get the movie you’re given.
Basically, the director MAKES the movie what it is. And a “technical achievement” should also be awarded to Best Picture. After all, the film as a whole is a technical achievement with help from many people outside the director.
If BAFTA had nominated ”1917” for Original Screenplay and Editing, it could’ve tied ”Joker” for the most nominations: 11. And if BAFTA had nominated George MacKay for Best Actor, ”1917” would’ve led them all. (By the way, MacKay was a BAFTA Rising Star nominee in 2014, but he lost to Will Poulter.)
I agree in not thinking its getting the BP win, I was just talking from a perspective of what other films winning would continue that trend – the latter being questionable because most people aren’t predicting Song Kang Ho but it’s possible. However, I do believe Irishman probably getting the editing nomination… It seems like it has quite a bit of support among editors and has built a good narrative around being engaging for 3.5 hours (even if not everyone would agree with that) and Thelma Schoonmaker is kind of legend at this point (even if she has already one like 3 time so definitely isn’t urgent).
I feel the only awards The Irishman will win will be editing, and maybe visual effects.
Trust me, it’s crucial for 1917 as well!…
Agree we can’t rule it out. I don’t see any surprises in supporting actor, although I guess Hopkins might be somewhat vulnerable.
No? What do you mean no?
It will be over in a month, thankfully.
Never said it wasn’t. But 1917 and Parasite are greater technical achievements IMO. And Marty has no chance of winning Director this year.
The longest 2+ hours of the year… Starting work at 5am CST and waiting until 7:18 (apparently) for the nominations… Now I just need to hope I’m not interrupted through them. May take an early lunch haha.
I see what you’re getting at… 3 WAY TIE FOR BD AT THE OSCARS!!!
I don’t agree with that but I always find it odd how the film with the most overall wins doesn’t win BP. Like GRAVITY and MAD MAX for example. I get why it happens obviously, but you’d think the most awarded film is therefore the “best” one…?
IMO Gerwig deserves the BAS Win more than she deserves a BD nomination.
Add it to the 0-10 list of the Century haha…
I LOL’d at his “advice”… It pains me that one of the MST3K/Rifftrax guys co-wrote MEET DAVE.
Always weird to hear you worry more about effing Emmy ratings than the quality of the programs they honor..
Also weird that you think nobody has access to streaming programs just because you can’t figure out how to get access.
Always weird, always tiresome.
The Irishman is probably dead now. It’s not even a lock in Adapted Screenplay. I’m feeling it’s gonna lose the so crucial (unless you’re 1917) Editing nomination.
Too bad Mendes was a no-show at the Critics’ Choice Awards. He could’ve scored some points if he gave an amazing speech there.
Gerwig’s win over Zallian, McCarten and Philips is a mockery.
Bong Joon Ho was very charming in his speech. He said he never expected to win and was just trying to enjoy his vegan burger there. In Korean, he also gave a shout-out to all his fellow nominated directors, and said he was going back to his table to finish his vegan burger. … My biggest letdown was not seeing the Young Actor/Actress prize presented. Roman Griffin Davis, the terrific 12-year-old star of ”Jojo Rabbit,” won, and I bet he would’ve stolen the show.
Director goes to Bong, mendes or Tarantino
Once upon a time in Hollywood is an important film for Tarantino and his crew
Let’s what BAFTA does, but I think Joker is winning Score.
Yes.
Yeah, true…
Don’t have direct evidence, but seems pretty unlikely that the 90-strong HFPA never has ties and the 250-strong BFCA has like three every year.
Are you sure?
Marriage Story is a movie of the week and so boring. Soooooooo boring.
truth.
Sad but true. AF. Definitely more “ugh” than “YHASSS” moments over the years.
So far, we were both right. 🙂
BAFTA didn’t seem to appreciate it a lot.
I don’t understand why split years happen. If a film wins best director, it should win best picture.
What directors have ever won the Oscar without an Acting or Editing nom for their films?
Joon-ho and Mendes best shots at any of those categories tomorrow is a 5th place. And they could easily miss it all.
These aren’t ties. There are way too many of them. They just call it a tie if it’s too close and I hate them for that.
Exactly – could mean anything.
means CC can’t make a call lol
WOW
Although it definitely means Once is looking REALLY good for that Oscar screenplay win…
It lost screenplay to Tarantino though. But that could mean anything.
I see no reason why he wouldn’t take BAFTA too so DGA shouldn’t be far off.
It’s sad isn’t it? My partner thinks I’m crazy. It’s only 12.18am for me so not as bad.
Why do we put ourselves through it?
I love watching the spectacle and the politics of the Oscars even though I almost always disagree with the winners!
I would love that, but Parasite is more loved.
I’m expecting OUATIH
We are watching a very tight football game where a team we like is barely hanging on against a team we dislike. We may have two teams we like in the final four.
See y’all in a few hours. Bright and early at 218am here. Why do I do this to myself?
No, Brad Pitt is definitely winning it. And Leo is likely to get nominated based on an email I got from Deadline Hollywood Oscar pundit Pete Hammond. I emailed him asking if in a competitive year Leo gets the necessary passion votes to get nominated, and he said he’s definitely getting in. It’s irresistible role for actors who are the ones doing the nominating, and 90% of the actor’s branch has lived the role of Rick Dalton. They identify with him. And I emailed Pete Hammond because he engages with Academy members way more than most Oscar pundits. That’s why I hold him, Tariq Khan, and Anne Thompson in such high regard. And I love Sasha Stone too, but she told me she doesn’t engage with Oscar voters that much.
I’ll just sleep less. 🙂
In my opinion, Joker has a darker, edgier, more atmospheric and original score while 1917 is a more traditional epic score – it felt like something other scorers, like Hans Zimmer and Howard Shore, might also have been able to create or even surpass, while Hildur Guðnadóttir’s score is its own unique species. Thomas Newman deserves an Oscar for his body of work but as far as the strength of the work this year is concerned, I feel Joker’s score is very much superior. I also loved The Haxan Cloak’s score for Midsommar (although that controversial film never had a chance in hell), Alexandre Desplat’s score for Little Women, Alberto Iglesias’ score in Pain and Glory and Dan Levy’s score in I Lost My Body and actually think all of the above are superior to 1917. But clearly, Thomas Newman deserves a few Oscars by now, for his score in The Shawshank Redemption and especially for Wall-E (above the overrated Slumdog Millionaire score).
The Irishman will have two and Parasite, let’s face it, WILL have zero, so not really. 🙂
OUATIH is a almost unwatchable film.
So, The Irishman is out, pretty much confirmed, since no BP winner in the 24 years of the BFCA era (and three more before that, in fact, using just the Golden Globes) has not won either picture, director or screenplay at either the Critics Choice or the Golden Globes. Likewise, Jojo Rabbit, Joker and Marriage Story – same issue. Parasite barely managed to win one, in this tie, so to me it still looks to be in trouble (for the BP win – otherwise it’s doing well, and is probably the most likely to win Best Director, although I’m feeling Tarantino at DGA, somehow). The four movies that qualify as valid Best Picture winners according to this never-yet-broken stat are Once, Parasite, 1917 and Little Women. Little Women I think we can rule out, pretty much (although I hope it at least gets the nomination), 1917 already has massive stats problems it’s just not going to overcome (unless some miracle happens), so, as assumed thus far, it’s between Once and Parasite, with Parasite itself looking pretty unlikely already, for various reasons.
As for Once, we can now say with great confidence that it’s no A Star is Born – it’s clearly way, way stronger than that, and in a much more difficult year, seemingly. (One in which, for instance, The Irishman can’t seem to manage to win anything significant. SAG appears to be its best shot – maybe also DGA. But, after this, it’s hard to see the latter happening. Also, like I said a bit earlier, the tie here and Mendes’ anti-stats Globe win more or less prove the race is very close in this category. I was thinking this might mean Tarantino – or Marty – might have a shot at winning the DGA, but I see that the last five times there was an HFPA-BFCA directing split, one of the two won the DGA. In fact, this has always been the case with one exception, 2003, when Chicago won it after failing to win both, then The Pianist won the Oscar after winning BAFTA. So, I guess a third winner at DGA is still possible. Especially since this isn’t a full split, given the tie. And GG+BFCA directing winners have lost the DGA before, no fewer than three times: Braveheart, The Social Network and Boyhood.) The BFCA Best Picture win in itself is a great predictor for the Oscar win. Since 1999, 70% of their big prize winners went on to repeat at the Oscars, and only once did two Critics Choice BP winners in a row not also win the Oscar. (And last year Green Book didn’t win here.) So, all looking very good for Once, still…
Liked the winners tonight a lot, as usual when it comes to the Critics Choice Awards. (I don’t always like ALL of their winners, obviously, but I like a lot of them, more than at most other awards shows.) Sucks that the acting categories are (seemingly) all boring once more – actually, a lot of categories might be, this year. But it’s no big deal. I think my favorite win of the night was Little Women’s screenplay win, which wasn’t even shown live. I don’t remember the last time I rooted so hard for a movie I hadn’t even seen yet. 🙂 It’s weird. I guess I have Sasha’s obsessive dislike to thank for that, at least partially. It’ll be really weird if I, too, end up not liking it much. (I doubt I could hate it.) Oh, no, I forgot: my favorite win was, of course, Glasgow’s tie for Best Song… But Little Women’s was a close second. I liked Toy Story 4 – the only nominee in that category I’ve already seen – so I was a fan of that win, too. Might change my mind once I see more.
Again, 1917’s editing win is no guarantee of an Oscar nomination – far from it, in fact. 3/11 (there was a tie one year) BFCA editing winners so far missed at the Oscars. (Inception, Birdman, First Man.) No significant changes in the stats table, and the Oscar nominations, the last piece of the puzzle this year, are just around the corner, so there’s no point posting the intermediate table now, since we’ll have the final version tomorrow. I will say that Once is a whopping 10 points ahead of second place already (The Irishman), and five points in the unweighted version, so it’s actually already mathematically guaranteed to finish in clear first place. I’m not calling BP locks until PGA, though, of course. You just never know… (Not that Once losing the PGA would even make it an underdog. But it would certainly mean it’s no lock.)
AGREED! That tumescent ego doesn’t need to be fed *ever* again.
Shhh, let him have this.
Yes, it is dragging a bit.
damn. at one point it seemed they were moving fast and now this traffic jam.
Here is hoping.
Birdman won editing here as well so they like the one-shot thing that clearly few other people do in editing
That will be probably a factor and would be a nice message and not like any asshole could argue that she is an undeserving winner who only won because she is a woman since the score she delivered is actually very impressive and up there with the best of them in 2019. The fact that I consider another score THE best doesn’t mean much really, it’s just personal preference.
Not dissimilar from Deakins, then… But I can’t see Deakins missing out on his second this year, in relatively short succession to his first, so could be a similar case with Newman soon enough.
Honestly, Hildur would be a solid winner so if she wins, my inevitable bitching won’t be about her, it will be more about “ffs why can’t Thomas Newman win a damn Oscar already?”.
I do think one other element to consider with a Joker win in score – and it’s not some ground-breaking observation – is that the Academy might enjoy sending a message by awarding the prize to a woman for a first time, in another year where women are not that present, and especially a woman attached to the movie that probably has the biggest baggage going into the season with critics. A lot of that baggage had nothing to do with the movie’s quality itself, so a win here might be a double middle finger to film twitter.
They do seem the most likely, intuitively.
Pitt is not present, the rest are.
The way this is going, we’ll be lucky if they finish in 45 minutes. I sincerely hope it’s not going to be 1 hour 45.
I hope they drop now cause I can’t wait anymore. sleepy.
Third; Rachel Portman for Emma and Anne Dudley for The Full Monty.
So I guess we both agree that both Joker and 1917 deserve to be nominated in Score only you prefer former for the win while I prefer latter. Fair enough.
DGA and BAFTA will smite Bong and go with Mendes. And Parasite will simply have to settle for the Cannes/Oscar International Film double. Nothing to scoff at.
I’d be happy with either 1917 or JOKER winning. But I’ll feel extremely bad for Thomas Newman if he loses again
Alright, I’m off to bed. See y’all bright and early tomorrow. Thankfully, I have hall monitor duty first period tomorrow, so I’ll be able to watch the nominations (hopefully, sans crisis).
Fleabag (the show) didn’t win yet, so no.
After tonight, and before SAG/BAFTA, feeling more secure on these:
BP – OUATIH
BD – Mendes, 1917
Actor – Phoenix
Actress – Zellweger
S.Actor – Pitt
S.Actress – Dern
Original – OUATIH
Adapted – Little Women
Cinematography – 1917
Hair/Make-Up – Bombshell
International – Parasite
The rest, TBD. 🙂
And is it me, or does Marriage Story feel like such a … whatever … after the initial buzz and superb reviews? Can say similarly of The Irishman. Netflix, hmmmm.
I disliked Once too! I truly deeply don’t get it.
To be fair that would also apply to The Irishman or potentially Parasite.
Things are looking good!… 🙂
What are you talking about? It won for Best Original Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor and Best Production Design as well as Best Picture.
1917 winning director is eyeraising given it got no critics love this season.
I’m sure the very late release hasn’t helped it.
I said BP winner/Supp. Actor NOMINEE
Which is probably why it’s so dreadful
That actually can’t happen – the academy have a tiebreaker for best picture (I believe it is whoever got the most number 1 votes)
I couldn’t agree more. Assuming Newman is nominated for ”1917,” it’ll be his 15th Oscar nomination in 25 years. He’s soooo overdue to win, and I wish he’d had gotten his Academy Award for his first iconic nominated score, ”The Shawshank Redemption.” … I’ll be disappointed if this year’s Oscar goes to Hildur Guonadottir’s ”Joker” for her very 1st nomination, but who said life’s fair?
So OUATIH will continue the BP winner/Supp. Actor nominee trend that started with Argo.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The best movie ever
Probably. Especially with Tarantino looking so strong for Screenplay.
This looks like an Oscar night list.
BP – Hollywood
Screenplay – Hollywood
Director – Mendes (or Bong, for that matter)
Agreed. This stuff matters. Tho I had a go at Colman for not being there last year and she won the Oscar lol
Irishman looks set to do a gangs of New York
Hmmm…I don’t quite get it, to be honest.
When you look at the regional critics group and the overall critical reception (from RT and Metacritic), it’s quite obvious that Parasite and the Irishman are better liked than Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
So how come when these critics combine into the BFCA and vote, they choose Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Is this a case of critics shamelessly choosing what they think will win BP rather than what they simply like best?
It really makes me think that because last year they went Roma and championed it for Oscar BP and got burnt with Green Book and this time they just want to be right instead of choosing the objectively better reviewed films.
Or am I making a mistake? Is BFCA not the same group of people from the regional critics? Because honestly I can’t really see critics changing their minds so quickly from Parasite or The Irishman to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Can Thomas Newman win the Oscar ONE fucking time?!? After seeing 1917 today, he absolutely deserves to win the award this year (although he also deserves it for body of work). The man had me in tears at the end (come back to us). And his score during the flare sequence was pitch perfect for the moment. Not to mention the “first wave” scene. Classic Thomas Newman, yet original in all the right ways.
As lovely as Joker’s score is, I will be pretty pissed if it beats 1917 on Oscar night.
most likely this happens everywhere, a Once/Mendes split.
Oh gross. Can we please stop celebrating the mediocrity of Tarantino.
I am so excited.
Haha.
Yes, as I was predicting, OUATIH won BP.
Another Picture/Director split this year?
He should have also won for American Beauty. Amazing score
safe BS yes. they come off as prophetic either way. means that buzz is with these 2.
There’s no frontrunner but I hope you’re right.
Awesome! You’re luckier than me today. 🙂
Delighted to see Mendes win here, even in a tie, such a surprise.
1917 winning editing also a big shock. I maintain editing to make it look unedited is a major achievement.
Acting winners all locked and loaded.
The team I wanted to win won, by the way.
That’s good for Joon Ho, but even better for Mendes. If 1917 wins DGA, so it’s done, Mendes is winning at least Director.
in a tie with 1917 😉
And just like last year, Colman didn’t care to come haha
I don’t think that either was as set as Renee.
Tie between Mendes and Bong for Director.
Mendes for director
So Parasite Best Film can still win in the end!!
yeah, I guess it ultimately depends on your faves after all
Colman lost this award to Close and Gaga (in a tie!) so of course it isn’t set. It’s somewhat likely.
Parasite or once upon a time in Hollywood a film I did not love will win best director and best picture. I would vote for Marty an the Irishman.
so acting sweeping quartet is set.
Zellweger for actress
Since they’re copying a lot (and they don’t split that often), I guess we should expect 1917 to win the big ones…
Succession—tv drama
Yes, I agree.
Yep. The female categories were a bit unpredictable.
I guess there are all the guild awards to go too but that’s definitely all the most high profile ones… I really should watch it!
And to think that its Emmy nominations were somewhat even surprising, according to consensus at that time. Extremely proud of Fleabag.
go sleep or you’ll sleep over AMPAS tomorrow. 🙂
Avengers Endgame won VFX. Can it win the Oscar?
I think last year’s actors race was better.
It’s currently 9.30 on Monday morning at my time and place, and the Oscar nominees will be later tonight at 8.20 pm. Sounds nice, but I always miss the Oscar live telecast because I can’t skip class on Monday morning 🙁
Right
My like was for Quentin.
You are so dedicated.
Yep. I am watching the game and keeping track of CC on Twitter and here.
LOL, guys go sleep CC is not worth it, bigger fish to fry tomorrow
I am watching at 4:30am.
I think the Dern/Phoenix/Pitt/Zellweger quartet is gonna sweep everything from now.
It was snubbed by ACE, so yeah I think it will miss
1917 will go Best Pic with Mendes winning the Directors Nod
surely remaining big 4 are the next?
Costume: Dolemite
Hair/Makeup: Bombshell
Production Design: OUATIH
Editing: 1917
Cinematography: 1917
Young Actor: Roman Griffin Davis
VFX: Endgame
Who won best Cinematography?
Bradley wilford and Sara Gilbert are looking spiffy for this affair and event
Oh FFS
I am being really daring and predicting Renee, Brad, Bong, and Parasite for these last awards.
I’m glad for little women and once upon a time in Hollywood for screenplay. Jokers original score was fine but I think Thomas Newman score for 1917 is more classic
and out of 60K they only covered first 20. 🙁
Special awards are almost always standing ovations.
I think DGA is too much of ego voting patterns, which hurts Tarantino.
To be fair they have about 60,000 TV categories to get through
Standing FORKING-O for Bell.
She gets to perform at the Super Bowl.
Taye diggs is doing good????? HUH????
what takes them so long now? Actress, Sup Actor, Director, Picture, lets go wrap it up.
Sure hope so!
That can’t have happened too often before, so I doubt it…
Yeah, Speechless is my second-favorite. (So far.)
Wow, consensus!…
Thanks!
Stellan. I just copypasted.
Supporting Actor TV: Stellen Skarsgard – Chernobyl
Best Song: Glasgow & I’m Gonna Love Me Again
Best Score: Joker
Best Adapted Screenplay: Little Women
Best Original Screenplay: Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
The Irishman and Marriage story should have won the screenplay awards.
Did they also announce score? I missed what won.
Which song was the other one?
Screenplay was off air. Wtf?
Also, Joker takes Score again!
Tarantino and Gerwig won Screenplay!
WTSU is a terrible winner but CC don’t mean shit and the show that should have win, Chernobyl, swept meaningful awards – Emmy and GG – anyway.
are they done with TV awards?
I want a gif of Bong checking his phone while Pacino struggles to read names off a sheet of paper and his phone at the same time.
Pathetic downvoting.
I thought it would be Knives Our or The Farewell.
B.F.H.
nah it’s all agenda. they want to be influencers. that’s why we rarely have a real race. they back up people whom televised awards won’t go for. that opens the door for sweeps.
Deakins is better than Lubezki
Irving Thalberg
Or perhaps they sometimes award things that they think are just as good or better than the ones “in the conversation”, but are not getting their due recognition.
This. I hate when critics do that. Like, their individual awards (LAFCA, NYFCA, NBR, etc) are all about trying to push people they think need help to get noticed, not necessarily that they are the best.
It is so annoying that the Golden Globes and now Critics Choice are trying to predict all the acting categories. Some of them are deserving but two in my opinion are not and one of them is Renee. So sad that the best performance will not win and maybe not even get nominated. ALFRE WOODARD is haunting but is lacking from campaigning. Renee is in third for me, after Alfre and Scarlett. If Alfre does not get nominated Scarlett deserves to win. Renee is almost a caricature although she is good in some moments, but her performance is not consistent.
Geez. Let the man make his “commercial movie” money.
This show has waaaaay to many awards. They want tv, film AND film craft categories?! And they nominate 7 or 8 nominees? Didn’t like rushed simultaneous presentations.
I don’t mind that so much – just wish it was full screen…
they know that no one sits through awards shows for Lifetime Award let alone Lifetime speech. So I appreciate awareness that results in cutting it short and moving onto awards that people are here for. I know it isn’t fair but that’s what it is. Competitive part of the show is the attraction, not the tributes.
Hi, I found a stream and it says they will show the awards in about 45 minutes. It’s 5:15PM there and the show will supposedly start at 6PM. They keep mention it in their news which is currently showing so it seems legit. It’s in english. I think it’s worth the wait than watch it with spanish voice over. https://ustvgo.tv/the-cw-live-streaming-free/
It hurts that these streams have no sound. The arocindo stream is definitely better than nothing but the live spanish translation makes it also kinda insufferable to watch.
Of course they’ll match. They nominate like 10 people in each category.
true. cut song intros, cut Broadway numbers, cut the host (oh wait, they did!) cut Irwin Tahlberg. Those are the worst.
”1917” has a WGA nod for Original Screenplay, but its script hasn’t been nominated by ANY critics’ groups, let alone won.
If I could somehow sync one of the audio-less streams with this thing, it would be close to perfect! 🙂
Somehow I can’t seem to find a link for that.
I don’t know if I would assume that. Is Foreign Language Film usually given on-air or off-camera? The BFCA doesn’t have enough time to show all the winners.
Nevermind – went offline.
I knew the answer to those questions
1. Chicago
2. Jerry maguire
3. Private John miller
Joaquin pheonix was great. Taye Diggs is doing good. Avengers: endgame deserved best action movie.
Parasite already won Foreign Language during the Red Carpet if you want to update that.
This means that it wins something else too, because they want some Koreans on stage too.
It should have been Antonio Banderas. Personally I won’t even nominate Adam Driver. Laura Dern don’t deserve it either. It should have been Florence Pugh. Laura Dern was better in Little Women.
Joaquin is iconic. The sooner people come to terms with upcoming sweep the better.
Agree. A lot of these will line-up with the Oscars. Certainly all the acting awards look like they are locked.
🙂 No idea…
I did not know this was already on. We are watching the game.
Laura Dern again. Poor JLO. I do wish Hollywood would recognize her for the hard work. Why watch these awards, it’s the same o same o winners.
What movie overperforms current expectations tomorrow? Which underperforms?
I think Ford v Ferrari is most likely to over perform
I think Marriage Story under
Since when Parasite is the front runner in the Best Director category….That’s absolutely wrong!
No way Once Upon a Time in Hollywood wins best picture…
I think this is going to almost match to perfection the Oscar wins.
Thanks, but I meant the full show! 🙁
I like the Clown Choice Awards… 🙂
ET has the red carpet at KTLA5 News. The moderator removed my link.
you really want a sound for Clown Choice? Well, they tend to be unintentional comedy but still…
But in hindsight, it’s a tie between KB and Eddie Murphy’s “Don’t play a spaceship’ when giving out advice to future entertainers (remember ‘Meet Dave’?). 😀
All my mixed feelings on Joon-ho and Mendes have to do with this. How many have won without any acting or editing nom?
I like a lot of these winners, including OUATIH!! I missed the show—who gave great acceptance speeches and kept up their momentum? Did anyone tank a speech?
Alright, off to bed. Gotta get up and watch that nominations announcement tomorrow!… Good luck to all! (Especially those rooting for the same things I am – but everybody else, too. Hope whatever lineups they’ve come up with please as many of us and as much as possible!)
Adapted is a weird one. It seems like the only thing The Irishman could potentially win, but that film seems increasingly to be on course to get a bunch of nominations and lose all of them. Then you have Little Women and Jojo Rabbit, which seem set to score fewer nominations, but seem to have more passion behind them; Waititi or Gerwig could also in theory benefit from consolation prize voting if they miss a Director nomination (which it seems like one of them must, and possibly both).
That was brilliant! 🙂
Agreed. But I’m hoping… 🙂
I still strongly advise against predicting Mendes for director – ESPECIALLY since he only tied tonight (and with the front runner). He was already highly likely to be facing monumental stats at the Oscars (he’d need to get 2/3 of acting, writing or editing, and only one of those seems a favorite to happen, to me, and one is almost guaranteed not to – acting). One simply does not win Best Director without at least 2 of those. Not since 1950, anyway…
I hope you’re right and Little Women repeats at the Oscars!
HEADLINE FIXED! 😀 😀
One-liner of the night in the acceptance speeches: “So there’s clearly been a HUGE mistake, but I am gonna stand up here and hold this until someone tells me that it belongs to ‘Moonlight’.”
Kristen Bell accepting the BFCA’s SeeHer award.
Yeah, I had Jojo all season for Adapted. Could still be The Irishman. I just feel like, whether or not Gerwig is nominated for Director … I could “see” her winning Adapted as a distinct possibility/a “thing” on the night. But I agree that it’s not some lock. Just a feeling I’m starting to get.
Alda or Waititi sound very plausible to me. More plausible than a foreign language performance from an unknown actor with no TV precursor nominations. Even Dafoe (BFCA nominee) seems a little more likely to me. And the SAG nominee, why not?! I guess it depends how strong one thinks Parasite is for BP – if one thinks it’s very strong, of course one will assume Song is the next-most-likely, if not, then I think not -, so this may be a bit of us running around in circles. 🙂 Regardless, like I said, while he’s clearly the most vulnerable of the five (although maybe Hanks is too – but would they really do that to him AGAIN???), for me Hopkins is still very likely to be nominated, for the reasons I mentioned. This just seems like it’s mostly a consensus category. I mean, he DID ONLY miss SAG…
Gerwig gave her actors great lines, but the screenplay is great for emotional expression. Old guys like me related to Chris Cooper. It should get in for BP.
Adapted screenplay, Editing, production design are up for grabs. I think 1917 should get PD. Gerwig certainly is a favorite for adapted. I think the others could continue through the guilds, BAFTA and oscars.
I think Adapted is still super competitive… Little Women v Jojo v Irishman. Bloggers are the biggest supporters of Little Women so this is the place it’s most likely to win if it only wins one place… I wouldn’t feel safe about it until / unless it wins WGA or BAFTA. I think that might even be the most competitive race we have.
I actually like the headline Once Upon a time in America , that film unlike Scorsese ‘s abomination is a great film as is Once. upon a time in Hollywood . The Irishman is done Marty put a fork in it .
Julia Butters started the acceptance speech.
BAFTA TV
The BFCA is not the same group of people from regional critics. They are a random group of people representing critics for television and TV affiliates, many of whom have questionable credentials to begin with. They seem more keen to predict the Oscars and take pride in doing so as a precursor than in sticking to their guns as film critics. They changed their name a few years ago from Broadcast Film Critics Choice to just Critics Choice to mislead people into thinking that they are a preeminent critics group when they are anything but. Many of the country’s most established critics are not in this group.
No.
Correction.” I did not like Hollywood.”
I know, but the British vote (the movie overall also did quite well at BAFTA) and his being such a tremendously respected veteran I think should secure his spot. (Did you HEAR the reaction he got in the room tonight?! I thought it was the strongest for any of the nominees in that category.) And yes, exactly, Song is probably not the first alternate, either…
Just ask Glenn Close. Awards are very unfair sometimes.
I think if it wins PGA, DGA, WGA you have to assume its winning picture but I really doubt that will happen. It could win PGA/DGA though and there have been some that have done that and lost but if it gets that I’ll feel like I have to at least consider it which is why I haven’t fully ruled it out yet. I don’t think it’s that likely to win PGA though.
I think Tarantino is continue to get the ‘give him Screenplay’ treatment, like he’s had his whole career.
They are a group of 414 jornalists and critics, US and Canada based, from Newspaper, Radio, TV and Online. On the official site of the organization, you can see the name of all of them and research about. Many of them, we know well: Pete Hammond, Jeff Wells, Anne Thompson, Nathaniel Rogers, Jazz Tangacy, who was part of this site, etc. In fact, many of them, are really part of Critic Groups organizations. But I don’t think they change their options from their regional Critic Groups. Being honest, “The Irishman” only won National Board of Review and New York Film Critics Circle. The film never made a splash with the critics organizations.
This. ^
I don’t think we should COMPLETELY rule it out – as long as it keeps winning (meaning, if it wins PGA, DGA, preferably also BAFTA – ideally for it also WGA), it probably WILL have a shot, however small…
I actually think Hopkins is very vulnerable tbh. He got BAFTA and HFPA but among US industry awards 2 Popes has done really badly. Nothing at SAG, WGA, PGA, DGA, ACE, in fact I don’t know if it has gotten a nomination at a single US industry guild? I love it so I hope the international contingent will push it all through but its clear the American industry are not fans. Though Song Kang-Ho is not the only other option for that slot so we shall see.
Yeah, 1917 has been nominated or won awards this season for Screenplay and Editing, and yet, it may miss one or both tomorrow morning.
It’ll be interesting to see if ”1917” gets an Oscar nomination for editing. It got passed over by the ACE nominations and BAFTA. For the record, ”1917’s” editor, Lee Smith, already has won an Oscar … for another war epic, ”Dunkirk.”
Also didn’t miss at BAFTA… (Which, again, 1917 did.)
Yeah, I get that – but Birdman proved to be strong enough to overcome the editing snub with its Triple Crown wins and lack of other industry snubs. It was the favorite “by count”. 🙂 So, we don’t know whether it won because the editing snub was a fluke, due to the way it was edited, or if it won in spite of the editing snub. I acknowledge the former is a possibility, of course. But, for me, it’s probably the latter, honestly. Especially given how well it did in editing at precursors that Oscar season. It didn’t miss ACE, like 1917…
I did say potentially. I don’t think we can rule it out after Roma last year (especially since the Parasite campaigning worked really similarly to Roma).
Please, editor, correct the title of the headline. You wrote “Once Up On a Time In America”.
And didn’t tie for directing and didn’t lose the Globe.
Again, not one broadcast network series represented. Maybe that’s why the Emmy ratings are in the sewer. ABC is looking for, I believe a 10-15% uptick in ratings for this year’s telecast. When all that’s there to honor is streaming stuff, good luck with that.
Feel bad for Carden and Harper. The deck was already stacked against them. The Fleabag/Maisel fix was in. Putting my marker down here; if The Good Place were on a streaming service, they would leave these poseurs in their dust when it comes to nomination and award-receiving.
well, Thanks god, the critics have a diferent opinion 😉
I believe the BFCA are very different people. They are mostly online journalists, and many of them are Oscar punduts mainly. By contrast, NYFCC has the well-known critics of the prestigious NY-based print newspapers like The New York Times, or Time, or others like these.
It’s about his ego, his dick, and his ego. An absolutely self-indulgent pile of tosh.
It doesn;t matter, because for whatever inexplicable reason the actual best scores of the year are being completely neglected… Monos, Uncut Gems, Ad Astra… the lineups all these groups have come up with SUCK!
I am certainly preparing myself for the inevitable, and seemingly annual, disappointment when it comes to Thomas Newman’s Oscar chances.
Tarantino loves film. Once upon a time in Hollywood is a movie about his past, present and future
9 nominations including BP and BD is not enough appreciation?
Haha, no problem.
Oh damn, how could I forget, LOL.. ignore my prior question
Still. That would be last year.
I agree Bong is the front runner, but I think the tie and the fact Mendes won the Globe prove it’s a close race… which might actually benefit some third party. 🙂 It’s happened before, I’m pretty sure. (Sans the tie.)
?? It won BSA and BOS.
Edit: I meant, at the Oscar
Last year.
Although Roma did actually win BP at the Critics’ Choice.
Umm, when was the last time Foreign Language – Director combo win?
looks like it. There’s strong indication that BAFTA will go for Once (with 1917 in British and Director). So if PGA goes Once and DGA goes Mendes, we have the split. SAG could go OUATIH or something else but that won’t change the game if whatever wins Ensemble doesn’t win any Picture/Director award.
Once for Picture!!
OUATIH for Picture
oh shit it’s a tie.. Bong Joon-ho
Which of course makes it look really good for the Oscar BP win.
though when upsets happen it’s always “no, not this category!” ha ha.
Yes, nominated for both, of course.
It seems, which to me, means less fun
I am still guessing Parasite. It is up, right?
Wasn’t there to give a speech. Tarantino accepted. Short speech.
Upcoming: actress, director
He did. 🙂
Very well deserved. It’s a masterpiece.
I just love awards shows. Wouldn’t stay up if it felt like a chore in any way. 🙂 (Actually, I even slept a little bit in the 2-3 hours before, as I was too tired – missed the snooker match as a result, but Selby lost anyway and I’m glad I didn’t have to watch that happen.)
So did Fleabag just complete the complete sweep of the TV awards season? Emmy, GG and CC. Are there any other major TV awards? It looks likely to win SAG Ensemble as well.
I read that Brad Pitt won.
🙁
It’s currently 9.30 on Monday morning at my time and place, and the Oscar nominees will be later tonight at 8.20 pm. Sounds nice, but I always miss the Oscar live telecast because I can’t skip class on Monday morning 🙁
4:30 a.m. here now…
At least you’re not watching it at 2:30 am…
The BFCA editing award is 10 years old and 3 of their winners were snubbed at the Oscars: Inception, Birdman and, last year, First Man.
EST but these awards are so boring.
Globes have movies up front, Critics prefer TV and once again a bunch of off-air are big cinema categories.
Inception, Birdman and First Man won this and were snubbed.
What time zone are you in?
I doubt it.
OK, that’s it, I’m out of here.
Poor Thomas Newman is losing the Oscar again. Let’s see what BAFTA does but Hildur is looking way more unstoppable.
They still have at least 2 Best TV Show categories.
There only doing tv. Liao. I want film categories to be broadcast on the air.
They’ve announced Best Actor
The Editing win for 1917 is really weird. It looks likely to be snubbed for the Oscar in that category.
1917 is most probably losing the Editing nomination tomorrow.
BEST SCORe WINNER: Hildur Guðnadóttir – Joker
The Irishman wins ensemble
1917, just announced.
And is there a stream to watch
Not yet announced
Regina King, Jeremy Strong for lead roles in Drama Series
Jean Smart and Billy Crudup win for Supporting roles in Drama Series.
Norman Lear is 97 and still kicking it. He’s best friends with jimmy kimmel.
They just announced Comedy Special…
Taye Diggs decent host. T J Miller was torture
An abundance of Tony winners. Audra McDonald, Christine Baranski, Billy Crudup, Scarlett Johnson, Al Pacino, Rita Moreno, Cynthia Erivo, Jesse Mueller
Yes, she will. Plus, second woman to win this category. And would probably be the first one if the Drama and Comedy/Musical split hadn’t happened at the mid 90s.
This.
But music branch has historically been notoriously resistant to newcomers. I’m cautiously optimistic for tomorrow morning, but a snub wouldn’t shock me.
Sure, and I do think Hildur will be a deserving winner, but First Man’s score was otherworldly.
I think this will be repeated with AMPAS unless Waititi takes Adapted. I don’t think Irishman is taking it and Marriage Story is only winning Supporting Actress. So Tarantino takes Original.
Joker is no First Man.
I hope we’re not in First Man territory again, which failed to get nominated after winning the GG and CC…
so remaining main movie awards next no?
so deserved!
Joaquin and Hildur are shaping up to be Joker’s locked wins.
It’s rare to a CC Song winner get snubbed at the Oscars, so could we expect Glasgow to get nominated tomorrow?
That’s bad, I like the score of Joker but Newman’s 1917 score is extraordinary he is so overdue
The Elton.
Joker.
I missed hearing the second recitation of off-screen awards
After Drive It Like You Stole It, I promised myself I would not be so “invested” in a song getting nominated here. Unfortunately, I am once again. Hope it’s in over the handful of Disney crappy songs. Curiously, the best Disney song is probably going to be snubbed – Speechless.
Hildur Gudonadottir
Glasgow won – no way!!! (Tied, but still.) Once and Little Women for screenplay – awesome! BFCA finally beginning to justify being my favorites…
It’s been the Through the Looking Glass version for the TV categories. Except for When They See Us, one calamitously bad winner after another.
Their speech was cut short. Harvey Keitel was speaking during commercial break and he was pretty good. Video of that on Twitter.
Ensemble.
Yeah, I guess Jojo didn’t make as much sense for Critics Choice…
LOL classic CC.
I did not care what win as long as Jo jo Rabbit did not win
The Irishman won best ensemble I hope it wins best picture.
For non-industry groups, very…
To give Pacino a boost. It didn’t help.
The way the camera zoomed into a random Asian in another table when Parasite was announced. Oh my.
The Irishman consolidates its status of slight favorite for SAG, I guess… (Around two thirds of the BFCA winners for ensemble repeat at SAG.)
It’ll probably be its only award of the night.
for what?
so how good is CC at predicting? In general?
So The Irishman finally gets to go on stage!
-waves-
Well deserved. She should have won last year for Hereditary
Because that’s their job, to influence. If a group thinks their job is to predict the Oscars, they get (rightfully) endlessly ridiculed, like the Critics’ Choice.
Toni Collette won! That’s awesome…
Glad the wonderful Fleabag is getting recognition this season. Quirky and very funny
ah, I see.
Yep, it’s not an action movie as such so probably didn’t even belong in that category
category was best action movie.
so the real weirdness comes from the BFCA’s shallow perception of what 1917 represents
Sasha’s campaigning paid off. 🙂
I feel the Action and Comedy categories are just a way to recognize the movies that can’t win the big ones.
Dole mite is my name was a brilliant-awards worthy funny outrageous good time.
I didn’t expect that either…
Wow, Best Comedy goes to Dolemite Is My Name!
Beating Jojo Rabbit, Knives Out, The Farewell, Booksmart.
No I mean it’s prospects for critics choice awards, not the Oscars
Does Critcs Choice really matter?
It certainly was aroncido
Not a good sign for 1917’s prospects tonight, surely?
I was born in the 80s and Eddie Murphy entertained me. Keep on making great Eddie!!!
She was terrific, worth watching
That was one of the shortest life achievement speeches I’ve heard at one of these. Ellen was also pretty short at the Globes.
Anne Hathaway was nominated for Modern Love limited series. She play a bipolar women looking for love and friendship. She is great in that.

I hope he wins something cause drunk Tarantino is always a good speech. he’s gonna drop expletives.
Eddie Murphy is America legend
Hopefully. Tarantino seems too drunk already.
I like the Oscars long because there every award is interesting. I just don’t like overlong “fun” things in the middle.
they are moving pretty fast. any chance they finish til 9?
I wished Oscars wanted to save time too. Anything that keeps it short is good. And kudos for getting 2 major categories out so early.
Thanks
Toy Story 4 for animated.
Why would they award both actor and actresses in a series together? Sounds like they just wanted to save time and picked the least important categories.
It’s twitch .tv/pablolol12 delete the space
I am watching this too. Thanks to aroncido.
aroncido’s Twitch thing (see below) is better than nothing…
It would be weird if Bong didn’t win Director with critics.
This is by far the best option so far. Many thanks!
“I can’t remember any other year that this happened.”
Yup, me neither… 🙁
How is it possible that no one can find a link to stream the show live with sound and everything? I can’t remember any other year that this happened.
Nevermind – went offline.
Yeah, it looks tape-delayed for the West Coast at 7 p.m. (PST).
already has. barely anyone is in this thread.
Was not trying to be funny Adam Driver ,Adam Sandler and Antonio Banderas were better.
it’s showing some sort of crime drama
it’s showing some sort of crime drama
On twitch dot tv, pablolol12 has a stream that is terrible and is live-translated into Spanish but at least has sound.
The show is very dry. I’m outta here.
Poor critics choice. The Oscar noms will overshadow anything that happens today
And way overdue. Should have won for Gladiator, the master and You were never really here
Maybe to cut the show time. I think it’s only one hour long.
Watching without sound is really an experience. Why are Andrew Scott and Alex Borstein going on stage together?
Has anyone found a way to stream the show live?
Different time zone, so live on Eastern, but Pacific is delayed?
you are so funny! Joaquin Phoenix was the best acting of the year…
Joaquim Phoenix 2×0 Trump
The CW, apparently.
what channel is it on?
I would if I could. I don’t seem to find any way to watch from the UK.
All the CW streams I find are either not working or are showing Family Feud or some random sitcom. What the hell…
Is anybody watching? Does anybody care?
Phoenix win is awful there are at least 3 other actors who were better .Adam Driver should’ have won.l They got Laura Dern right.
Phoenix won the actor’s award. But I swear these so-called actors don’t know how to accept an award and speak.
These are the audio-less streams (maybe somebody can figure out how to fix the problem):

http://freestreams-live1.com/cw/
Where’s Phantom, the stream guy, to save the day again?
they are fun when hosts throw shades. but it seems that they abolished their head scratching awards such as MVP of the Year and those hilarious Action Awards so not that fun anymore.
Anybody have a stream? I’ve got nothing. (A couple with no sound…)
