Just watched this weekend’s 60 Minutes interview with James Cameron. Somehow I’ve missed all the broadcast promos for Avatar that have recently aired, so tonight is the first time I’ve seen clips from the movie in vivid big-screen 1080p. Gotta say: Gulp. My ravenous eyeballs have been waiting to be raped for weeks, and they finally got what they’ve been hankering for. Even regular segments on 60 Minutes sometimes have an uncanny 3D appearance n HD. Trust me, the Na’vi look a helluva lot more convincingly lifelike in high def than Andy Rooney does.
There are AMPAS members who’ll be moved by Oprah holding hands with actresses telling their stories of abuse. There are voters who’ll be intrigued by Nine’s cross-platform synergy energizing Dancing with the Stars and spotlighted in other popular media pedestals. But there’s an entirely different segment of the Academy elders who recognize the respect and prestige a 60 Minutes profile can bestow. Having Morley Safer, the veteran CBS Yoda of culture and sophisticated taste give a movie his stamp of enthusiastic anticipation is a showcase more esteemed than money can buy. After some recent worries that Avatar marketing was skewing for maximum youth appeal, many of us have been needing to see it validated as sincere grown-up sci-fi, hoping for a re-certification of maturity. Tonight on 60 Minutes I think we got it.
If CBS is smart they’ll have the James Cameron segment available online in a few hours. If not, they’re blowing a excellent opportunity to share what’s sure to be an immensely popular clip. Somebody help me keep an eye out for embeddable options, while my own eyeballs recover from tristesse and bask in the avatarglow.
