There is nothing sweeter than the idea of The Hurt Locker winning Best Picture, or its director, Kathryn Bigelow, taking home the big prize. But, and I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, this was an expected win. Not only that, the Gothams and the Film Independent Spirits are outside indie awards — more indicative of potential nominations than Oscar wins. What this win does do for The Hurt Locker, though, is give it a nice fat injection of heat of buzz. Nothing wrong with that. However, our pal AJ from All These Wonderful Things informs AD that Hurt Locker is not eligible for the Spirits, as it was submitted last year.

We will also have it live streaming after the cut (along with their interactive Twitter widget).
It’s fairly interesting to see how the Spirit Awards have evolved over the years. This year, we can expect some Oscar crossover. I’m going to bet that the following people are probably going to be recognized somewhere:
The Messenger, and its stars Ben Foster, Woody Harrelson and Samantha Morton.
Precious, despite the high profile backers, it is still a fairly independent movie
Trucker, and its star Michelle Monaghan
A Single Man, Colin Firth and Tom Ford
An Education
A Serious Man perhaps, in some fashion
500 Days of Summer
How do you think it will go?
