The Spirit Awards will be announced tomorrow, though several titles will not be eligible. Anything that costs over $30 million is not eligible. From Netflix, these films:
- Maestro
- Society of the Snow
- Rustin
- Nyad
- The Killer
- They Cloned Tyrone
They also do “gender neutral,” just like the Gothams, which means, at least to me, they have knocked down a peg in terms of influence. Like seriously, why should we care if they eliminated an extra win in the acting categories? I’m trying to figure out a way to care. And I’m running short on answers.
Thankfully, the National Board of Review will not do such an insane thing and will have two winners in each performance category, which is much more fun for all of us.
What I’ve always liked about the National Board of Review is that they rest somewhere between the more mainstream film awards like the Oscars and the more niche film awards like the critics. Although these days there isn’t much of a difference anymore. The NBR used to be more like the Golden Globes once upon a time. They don’t do much virtue signaling with their awards. They had no problem awarding Top Gun: Maverick their Best Picture prize last year (and it was the film that should have won the top prize last year).
They tend to do a good job pushing a movie through, or a performance through, that isn’t making its mark in the punditry universe. This year, the consensus feels much more wide open than it did last year, so it will be interesting which way the NBR falls.
Most of the time, their Best Picture winner makes it into the Oscars for Best Picture, give or take a Da Five Bloods or A Most Violent Year. Shockingly, this was true even when the Oscars had five Best Picture contenders. Here are the films they’ve chosen over the past few decades:
2000 Quills
2001 Moulin Rouge
2002 The Hours
2003 Mystic River
2004 Finding Neverland
2005 Good Night, and Good Luck
2006 Letters from Iwo Jima
2007 No Country for Old Men
2008 Slumdog Millionaire
2009 Up in the Air
2010 The Social Network
2011 Hugo
2012 Zero Dark Thirty
2013 Her
2014 A Most Violent Year
2015 Mad Max: Fury Road
2016 Manchester by the Sea
2017 The Post
2018 Green Book
2019 The Irishman
2020 Da 5 Bloods
2021 Licorice Pizza
2022 Top Gun: Maverick
It’s less common for their winner to go on to win Best Picture, but as you can see, it does happen. There is no particular way to figure out what film will win. Who could have predicted Da 5 Bloods?
Here is the Best Actor history:
2000-Javier Bardem, Before Night Falls
