German businessman John Rabe established the Nanking Safety Zone during the Japanese occupation of that region, and it’s estimated he saved the lives of 200,000 Chinese from the Japanese military atrocities.

Oscar winner Florian Gallenberger directs Ulrich Tukur, Daniel Brühl and Steve Buscemi in the film which won 4 German film award Lolas last year (Best Film, Best Actor, Best Production Design and Best Costume Design).
