For this podcast, Ryan, Craig and I take a look at 1971, the year that The Last Picture Show went up against A Clockwork Orange, The French Connection (the big winner). Not only were these films arguably more brave than in any other year (except maybe 1970), but they illustrate a decade when the Academy had, not to put too fine a point on it, balls. Through the ten year span, the films they chose for Best Picture were only sometimes traditional. And it wasn’t just the Academy choosing them; it was the public. Only in the last five or so years has the Academy come close to remembering that decade in their choices. It has come at a price. They are often criticized for being too out of the young with the public – and for choosing films “no one saw.” But in so doing, they have honored better films. It’s really as simple as that. Anyway, here it is.
