Little Gold Men’s John Lopez on what the Grammys can learn from the Oscars (the Grammys get no respect, as in, they’re complete sell-outs – but they get higher ratings. ¬†The Oscars are still semi-respectable but their ratings suffer as a result):
Give “Appealing to the Young” One More Try: It’s a sign of the Academy’s elderly nature that their attempt to appeal to the “youngins” is hiring Anne Hathaway and James Franco as hosts: both Princess Diaries and Spider-Man have been on DVD since back when DVDs were still relevant. The Grammys seem to have a keener finger on the pulse of youth culture: they know all you have to do is throw in some Bieber and you’ll capture tween-girl viewers for the rest of their lives. If the Academy really wants to reach a new generation of viewers, they had best find even the flimsiest excuse to suspend the Bieber from wires and lower him, Katy Perry-style, onto the Kodak’s stage. Mix in a duet with girl-kisser Perry herself, and you’ve got a recipe for ensnaring the entire under-25 population.
