This looks pretty great but I find myself hoping a romance doesn’t blossom between the two leads.

Sasha Stone has been around the Oscar scene since 1999. Almost everything on this website is her fault.
I have a super soft spot for this type of cinema cheese. Not a huge fan of Keira Knightley normally, but she lures me in this. Looking forward to seeing Mark Ruffalo {as always} and Hailee Steinfeld – looks like Catherine Keener, Mos Def, Ceelo Green and James Corden are in it too. Good stuff.
I agree with those that say Keira is a great actress. I think she should have been nominated for Atonement, A Dangerous Method and Anna Karenina. Three amazing performances. I’m hoping she gets a nomination for Best Supporting Actress for The Imitation Game.
I HONESTLY believe Keira Knightley was robbed of at least a nomination fo “ATONEMENT” and “ANNA KARENINA”. She can act and unlike the other actresses out there, she has proven her versatility as an actress on her body of work.
Keira can’t act? People just hate her because she was in the three first Pirates films. Watch “Pride & Prejudice” just to see how good an actress she really is. She handles that dated and difficult dialogue like a true pro, perfectly.
But what’s UP with her voice in this trailer at 2:08 – it sounds like she was dubbed in that clip. The voice on the audio is nothing like her normal voice. Is it just me? :/
In fairness to George, Owen Gleiberman spoiled that particular plot point ages ago in his TIFF review.
well in the final cut of the movie there ISN’T even a HINT of them getting together. not for one moment. so i’m not spoiling shitttttt. I did not spoil the ending AT ALL, SO MUCH MORE. I just said something that is never even implied at all within the film. they were never going to get together….. it’s like me saying Clooney and Bullock don’t hook up in Gravity lol.
‘ATONEMENT’ minus ‘the’
Keira Knightley made it VERY big VERY early on, she was only 18 in 2003 when she had three cult-bound international Box Office hits (Bend it like Beckham, Pirates of the Caribbean, Love Actually), after those (with the inevitable Pirates-sequels already on the way) she could have stayed in the franchise-business, she could have gone the ‘hot young thing’ route (=romcoms) yet she opted to do challenging, critically acclaimed (and often already iconic) roles in films like Pride & Prejudice, The Atonement, The Duchess, Never let me go, A Dangerous Method and Anna Karenina. Sure she had a few misses along the way (King Arthur) but even most of those were at least interesting (though ultimately failed) attempts (Domino, London Boulevard, Last Night, The Jacket, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World) and could/should be easily forgiven considering the impressive sextet listed above AND what seems to be her most versatile year yet (Jack Ryan, Laggies, Begin Again, The Imitation Game).
Bottom line : Keira Knightley started out as an endearingly inexperienced therefore perfectly adequate actress but thanks to MANY consciously fearless career choices, she has improved dramatically in the last 10 years (think Michelle Williams ‘Creek 1st season / Brokeback Mountain’ kind of dramatic improvement) and I genuinely believe today she is one of THE best actresses of her generation…and definitely one of the fiercest. I mean, just think about it, how many of her peers would have dared to take on Sabina Spielrein or a remarkably experimental take on Anna Karenina ?
Casting directors please wake up 🙂 Keira can’t act. She is so overrated.!!!!
George Simmons, you are a fucking idiot. I seriously hope you actually didn’t see the movie and you are just trolling. I don’t know what’s worse, a troll or a film buff who is dumb enough to spoil a movie that hasn’t come out yet on a film blog.
@George Simmons, thank you for spoiling the end of the film for the rest of us.
I’m somewhat sold on Ruffalo as an “ex-record executive”, given the teaser. (And I’m glad to see Hailee Steinfeld active despite the fact that the trailer was apparently focusing on Ruffalo and Knightley’s characters; I can’t prove it but for some reason I’ve got a good feeling she’s going to deliver, her role big or small here.)
However, for some reason, Keira Knightley, to me, doesn’t look insecure and vulnerable enough [that’s how I imagined her character was meant to be by the writer] . . . . And that smile — [sigh] the Pride and Prejudice smile . . . . — I’m sorry, but she needs to put that aside, already . . . . (I’m guessing that it would be way too risky to cast a relatively unknown female lead in her prime who CAN sing using her own vocals while also looking somewhat vulnerable a la Carey Mulligan . . . . [not saying Mulligan herself would have been a better choice; just talking about the air of silence . . . . ])
(Make no mistake: I’ve got nothing but big big love in the night so stiiill a la Buckingham for Knightley’s performance in Pride and Prejudice.)
Thanks for embedding.
To those who watched it at TIFF, how’s Keira Knightley’s performance? Possible Oscar nomination?
This looks like it would be a great movie to watch on an airplane.
The reviews out of TIFF were pretty great, so I’m crossing my fingers that this a case of a badly-edited trailer that doesn’t do the actual film justice.
And Knightley’s doing her own singing 🙂
Who’s singing for Knightley?
No longer called “Can A Song Save Your Life?”. I’m both glad (because I didn’t like that title) and disappointed (because the new title is painfully dull).
Also, the trailer didn’t do it for me. I always worried that Once was lightning in a bottle that couldn’t be replicated, and Carney’s new film doesn’t look like it will convince me otherwise. It feels like a bland studio movie, which is exactly what Once stood in hard opposition to.
