Breaking Bad won 6 Emmys, tonight, including climactic wins for Bryan Cranston, Anna Gunn and Aaron Paul. Sherlock won 3 Emmys, including those for the renowned duo Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. Fargo and The Normal Heart won for Outstanding Mini-series and Outstanding Movie. Directors Cary Fukunaga and Colin Bucksey won Emmys for their work on True Detective and Fargo.

I freaked the heck out when Steven moffat won, I was so excited and so happy I started crying and had to watch him win 4 more times.
I have loved him and his wife sue since coupling. In my opinion one of the funniest shows ever, based on friends.
When I saw his name in the credits during season 1 of sherlock I was so excited. And I’m thrilled he won for the last vow episode, it was amaze balls!
Also I was really pissed Matthew didn’t win last night, but Steven winning makes up for it.
Combined with the emmys given out last week, Sherlock was the big emmy winner – collecting 7.
Really pleased for the love shown to Sherlock: His Last Vow. Steven Moffat has been, for the past few years, one of the most creative writers on British TV and Cumberbatch has created one of the great TV characters of modern times. It’s ironic that he now has an Emmy for the role, but has always been overlooked by BAFTA.
Not surprised there was little love for House of Cards Season 2. It was a disappointment. In fact, it’s inclusion in the best drama series list was unnecessary. The character of Underwood is brilliantly written and Spacey delivers a career-best performance. But beyond that the series was flabby, with too many uninteresting sub-plots (Stamper and Rachel, Remy and Jacqui, for instance). Even the final episode was an anti-climax. President Walker gives up in a mild mannered way to avoid a scandal involving party funding that was impossible to care about. Underwood predictably becomes President, bangs the desk and looks at the camera. And that was it. Not even a final speech to camera.
Bryce, exactly. Breaking Bad is one of the only shows where an excess in love and awards is truly justified. Cranston won 4 emmys for acting in the show, sure, but who would have argued a 5th or 6th? Damien Lewis winning, while I preferred Cranston, wasn’t the worst thing. He gave the 2nd best performance that year. Jeff Daniels winning, now that was a bad call. The only thing Breaking Bad was constantly overlooked for was in writing and directing. While it didn’t win directing, the Emmy for Ozymandias seemed to make up for it. They honored the best episode of the show and any show from that year.
Sallyinchicago, I’m sorry more winners were white but the Emmys nominated mme minorities this year than any other. Joe Morton and Uzo Aduba winning, Cary Joji Fukunaga are very deserving winners, as are a few other “minorities in awards”, like Gail Mancuso and Moriarty Walley-Beckett, who wrote arguably the finest hour of television this past year, or any year for that matter. All the Breaking Bad wins, those can’t be argued. Sherlock constantly being the bridesmaid and finally being the bride, that was nice to see. Cumberbatch winning over Elba? Well Elba won a Golden Globe a few years ago so, maybe sweet justice (I kid). Fargo won miniseries, what else deserved that? Normal Heart won movie, what else deserved that? I’m not being snippy and I apologize if it comes off like that. Did you mean white as in the winners or the presenters or the audience?
Whoa. Not a bad night at all after you subtract the stinking Modern Family wins.
Breaking Bad sweeping might not be “exciting” anymore, but it’s the only acceptable outcome. As much as I liked True Detective, Mad Men and Game of Thrones over the past year, the best was so clear and the ending so strong that anything else winning would have been corrupt.
The awards for Sherlock were the best and only unexpected wins. The EMMY rut really detracts from the quality of the nominations.
@seattlemoviegoer: The cable/streaming services need to start their own awards show. Besides cable/stream isn’t “real” TV.

This is going to seem out of line, but that awards show was mighty “white”. And people complain about the Oscars? The Emmys are worse.

As I’m not a keen Sex and the City and Frasier fan, the lead and supporting in comedy don’t really cut it for me. Same goes for Spader and Janney in Lead Drama Categories. But I think if Gandolfini, Falco, Shaloub, Aniston, Tambor and Catrall (I can live with her winning) won that year, the world would have exploded.
Oh, and Best Drama and Best Comedy went to The Sopranos and Arrested Development. The best year for the Emmys BY FAR!!!

the Emmy’s are even more frustrating than the Oscars. they get into a rut and award the same artists year after year after year even tho there is so much better and newer work being done. i’m surprised NORMAL HEART won for best TV movie. they historically pass over works that are the hands-down, most-acclaimed shows of the year and reward some out-of-left-field contender. i lost all faith in the Emmy’s when they passed over LONESOME DOVE and Robert Duvall’s Gus McCrae in 1989.
The worst part about some of these multiple winners is that I’m perfectly fine with them winning once or even twice, but c’mon, does Modern Family need FIVE Emmys? Or Jim Parsons need FOUR?
Even Aaron Paul, who was incredible as Jesse Pinkman and absolutely deserved his trophy in 2009, didn’t need THREE awards since there were other actors more deserving in his last two winning years. Paul had little to do in Breaking Bad’s final season so it seems a crime that he got an Emmy while Dinklage (admittedly a past winner himself) or Josh Charles didn’t, or any of the many great supporting performances got snubbed.
Maybe the Emmys should have a ‘three wins and you’re retired’ rule or something.
This Modern Family bullshit has got to stop. It is so middling, formulaic, generically likable. Oh wait…that’s why it keeps winning.

No Tolman, No Dinklage, No McConaughey, Modern Family again, Jessica Lange again, Breaking Bad again. All in all quite a disappointment with a few bright spots like Fukanaga, Freeman or Cumberbatch. The last two not very deserving, but it’s a nice surprise.

I should say that a friend who was HIV+ played the Matt Bomer role in an 80’s production of The Normal Heart here in Alabama. He was beautiful.
I’m more excited for Matt Bomer and The Normal Heart than I was for any of the Oscar nominees. The heart wants what it wants.
I know it’s probably not going to happen, not this year at least, but I would love to see Game of Thrones finally get the recognition it deserves by winning top honors. However, like Breaking Bad, it may have to wait until near the end of its run before it finally happens.
That being said, I still have my hopes that it might be able to overcome Breaking Bad this evening, though it too is very worthy of the win.
