Sasha Stone has been around the Oscar scene since 1999. Almost everything on this website is her fault.
I just watched Se7en tonight for the first time in a few years. For my money it’s still Fincher’s best, such an incredible piece of sinister atmosphere, strong performances, and a fascinating balance of how the protagonists’ minds are effected by the murder mystery at the center of it all. Great stuff.
“People are perverts.”
For someone who has made a career off of telling stories of others’ lives, no matter how fictional, that’s probably the one lesson any good filmmaker would come away with eventually.
Nice.
“One of the best experiences I’ve ever had in a theatre.”
Hear Hear! And that’s why to me is his best. In short Se7en was a very visceral experience for me. I couldn’t shake it for a long time after I’ve seen it. Just brilliant!
James, I’m lucky enough to have seen it opening weekend. A few seconds into the credits and we knew we were in for a world of hurt. We knew it wasn’t going to be silly demonic possession crap, but real and remorseless cruelty. When Spacey turned up half an hour from the end I swear I can still feel the whiplash the audience got in their seats. The movie has just done a 180. What the… where’s the next half hour going to take us. Incredible. One of the best exepriences I’ve ever had in a theatre.
“If I were to consider aesthetic only, SE7EN is No. 1”
Yea after rewatching it the past week, I realized it might be my favorite. I only wish I saw it in 95 with a packed theaters. Okay maybe not cause I was barely 8, but still it would have been great. I don’t think I would have realized how it embraces cop genre conventions while also subverting them as well.
Good stuff. Shows why Fincher’s films hold up so well and why we notice something new every time we rewatch one. He’s got the Kubrick fetish of precision filmmaking and that’s what makes his work fascinating.

Nicely done.
