Diversity Among Winners at the Oscars from Bard Edlund on Vimeo.
Bard Edlund, creator of this bleak video says:
“A lot of noise has been made about the lack of diversity among nominees for the Oscars this year. This video shows how many Black, Hispanic, and Asian winners there have been throughout history, across four main categories — best actor/actress, supporting actor/actress, writing (original and adapted screenplays), and directing.
“Determining race/ethnicity and assigning people to categories can be a rather dicey and imprecise activity. Some inaccuracies or points of contention must be expected.
“I took a chance when designing this: The video already includes the 2015 ceremony results. If Inarritu does not win Best Director, nor for best original screenplay, my video will not need to be updated. If he does, I will make the necessary change at my earliest convenience.”
@JIM
Really? ‘”whining and bitching about race.”? I don’t see how making observations and wanting change to happen is “whining and bitching” Change that won’t hurt anyone but will help the art of filmmaking. One of the reasons I love film is to see different perspectives on the world. The real “whining and bitching” is when people get upset about anyone speaking out about social progress. It is unbelievable that one who doesn’t care about or like reading about this point of view would even click a link that says “Visualizing The Lack of Diversity Among Oscars.”
