Houston Critics Name Damon and Quaid to Special Awards

Houston (12 December 2015) Matt Damon and Dennis Quaid will be honored by the Houston Film Critics Society for their work on and off screen.

Both will be honored at the HFSC annual awards presentation on January 9 the Society announced today.

Damon, currently starring on screen as The Martian, will receive the organization’s Humanitarian Award for his work to address the world’s water crisis. In designating the honor, the Society recognizes how Damon, a co-founder of water.org, uses the power of celebrity to bring attention to a serious situation.

“Damon does what so many stars could do,” says Joshua Starnes, President of the HFCS, “as he uses the spotlight on him to focus media attention on how people and countries can work together to aid developing countries as they work improve access to safe water.”

Quaid, one of the cast members of the new film Truth, will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award for his work on screen in more than 70 films. The Houston native – who attended Bellaire High School and the University of Houston – first caught attention in Breaking Away and The Right Stuff before being named Best Supporting Actor by the New York Film Critics for Far From Heaven in 2002.

“As the film society of our city, we are thrilled to honor a ‘native son’ for a career filled with memorable moments on film,” said Starnes.

Awards to Damon and Quaid will be presented when the Society gathers to honor the best in film for 2015.

The Houston Film Critics Society represents print, broadcast and internet film critics who reach millions of people with their reviews. The Society is also known for its outreach to the community to encourage local and area filmmakers as well as bring the excitement of film to students.
