Mad Max: Fury Road received 10 Oscar nominations last month. Civilization has collapsed in this post-apocalyptic film directed by George Miller. Tom Hardy plays Mad Max, and Charlize Theron plays Imperator Furiosa. Together they battle their adversaries.
The film took 25 years to develop and was shot using storyboards rather than a traditional script. Aside from receiving a Best Picture nomination, the film also received Best Cinematography and Best Director nominations.
In this Focus On piece, revisit the Case For Mad Max: Fury Road and Sasha’s review of the film.

The Case for: Mad Max: Fury Road – the Film That Saved Hollywood from Itself
Mad Max: Fury Road – When you ain’t got nothing, you got nothing to lose
I honestly hate to say this, but I’m getting a huge feeling that Revenant is going to pull off a near sweep, only losing the Visual FX Oscar and tying Ben-Hur,Titanic,LOTR with 11 wins.
Given that Inarritu apparently could remake “Ass” from Idiocracy and contend for Oscar, I think Max could get skunked completely.
“‘Mad Max” won lotsa critics’ awards. It got 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Director. It cleaned up at the Broadcast FIlm Critics Awards, even picking up Best Director. It was heavily favored to take DGA. And then it lost DGA. And it’s not up for Best Film or Director at BAFTA. Now many pundits are writing ”Mad Max” off for Picture and Director. What happened? Genre bias? Or can it still come roaring back for Oscar’s top prizes?
The best movie of the year, period. Possibly my favorite action movie.
I love the film and it would get my vote for Pic and Director, but I think its victories are going to cap out at 5, max (pardon the pun)–a total which still stands a good chance of being the most for the night, but will still involve all below-the-line tech/craft areas. In order of likelihood:
Sound (M&E)
Production Design
Makeup
Editing
Visual FX
Cinematography
Costumes
