Michael Rapaport Expresses What Many Are Feeling This Morning

There is just no way to really describe what it was like to have been invested in seeing Sly Stallone take the stage at the Oscars. It was the only thing people were talking about in the lobby. It wasn’t just at the Oscars. I’ve been hearing about Stallone from people I know all season long. The possibility of that win meant so much to so many people, just the mere idea of it. That’s the stuff that Oscars are sometimes made on. We don’t want to think that the Academy are just an elitist club full of snobs who pretend to award “worth,” when really all they’re doing is letting you into their club (as Chris Rock said, in so many words). And it’s possible that the Oscar voters shied away from controversy, perhaps thinking, “Let’s not set this in stone that we only awarded the one white guy in Creed.” There is that. And then there are people who really think Mark Rylance deserved that win. Indeed, he is great in Bridge of Spies. It’s just that there is nothing about that performance that screamed “please give him the Oscar.” That was the case with Sly. Alas. 40 years since the original Rocky. I guess you could say this time All the President’s Men won instead.
