Indiewire reports:
Ron Howard‘s “Frost/Nixon” found staggering numbers in its opening weekend, according to initial estimates from Rentrak early this afternoon. On three screens, the Universal release grossed a massive $180,147 for a $60,049 average. That average ranks as a 2008 high, beating out the likes of “Kit Kittredge: An American Girl” and last weekend’s “Milk” (which, mind you, opened on 30 more screens than “Nixon”). How “Nixon” expands in the coming weeks is uncertain but at this point, its looking like a winner. Of Howard’s other initially limited releases, “Nixon” nearly doubled “A Beautiful Mind“‘s opening average of $33,377 from 11 screens.
I figured this was a good strategy when I checked out the local movie scene and found Frost/Nixon only playing at one theater. I figured, yeah, it’s going to play to packed houses and that, in turn, will build excitement so that when it opens the lemmings will come in droves. Or so the theory goes. Nice work, Uni.
